Continuing on with jobs within the Theatre, we was instructed to get into our previous groups of interest of job roles and create a job advertisement looking for such. As the Casting Director and Director were put into the same group, Mario and I went along with writing a job vacancy for a Casting Director's assistant. Using the sheets we had before, where we had to find our own information on what specifications, qualifications, and qualities one needs for the vacancy, we used the sheets to help begin our wanted ad.
We had put as a heading Casting Directors Assistant wanted and wrote what the job entails. We specified that:
- one had to be prepared to work long hours
- have previous experience (evidence provided at interview)
- be confident
- have a clear speaking voice
- will be working closely with the casting team, agents etc
- be able to work under pressure, remaining calm and confident
With what we had drawn up, each group then had to conduct and play out an interview and show to the class. It was a good exercise to do as we were able to use technical skills such as improvisation and naturalism, seeing how each interviewee answered the questions directed at them. It was refreshing and humorous to see as some of the answers they gave, did give a reminder that there are people who are obnoxious, arrogant, and the way my fellow actors portrayed each character added an element of truth that there are people out there that would answer questions as such.
After each group had presented their mock interviews, we as an observant audience had to answer if the interviewee would have gotten or not gotten the job and why.
1) Costume Designer
There was a good contrast between Justyna and Danielle.
Justyna showed an enthusiasm that was forced down the interviewers throats, and was arrogant in her skills that 'when you have that talent inside you, who needs grades' currently she was working in McDonalds, and when asked if the job was right for her, she said 'because...it's just right for me, I can see it in myself, look at me!', and then asked when can she start.
Danielle showed an enthusiasm that was conserved, she showed she was calm and collect, when asked if the job was right for her, she said 'I have a passion for fashion, I have been working with a school when they hold productions and design their costumes'. When asked, she presented her portfolio whereas Justyna just forced it on the interviewers.
I noted that when Elliott said 'we'll contact you' to both Justyna and Danielle, it was evident who they'd want for the job. There was an emphasise on the 'you' directed towards Danielle whereas when it was directed towards Justyna, he said it to get rid of her.
2) Make-Up Artist
It was interesting to watch this groups interview and the way they presented it. It was very creative, when Emma asked Parys so show her work, Abigail was the before, and Grace was the after. As Grace had make-up on and had straight hair and Abigail hadn't make-up on and had a rag tied around her head, it was obviously a suggestive idea that they all agreed it and was effective. Emma was a nonchalant interviewer, which showed that there was interviewers like that and that some interviews would be based on practical evidence and being observed how you interact with the client.
They also showed that she got the job at the end.
3) Set Design
Sharney was the interviewer, she conducted an interview as if she was setting out a task and interviewed a number of applicants in one go and she was explaining what they were looking for and what the job entails. She was basically a live advertisement. They then ans
They were responsible for:
- designing and creating for sets for films and plays
- some of the designs can be similar but different
- make sure that each set is detailed
Afterwards Sharney asked questions to find more about the people.
Questions:
1) What makes you a creative person?
2) Has there been any artist that inspires you?
3) How do you make something special?
4) How do you make your creative ideas stand out?
5) What makes you as a person stand out from other people?
Sharney then added that it's not always about your experience or qualifications but the skills and qualities you possess.
6) What skills do you feel you need to be a set designer?
- Time Management skills
- Good imagination and creativity
- Understanding the historical background of the plays/films to design the set correctly
- An inspirer
She then concluded if you think that this job is right for you, dial 0207294 and we'll be right back at you.
Sharon then asked us as a class what do we need in order to do an interview:
- confident
- know the job you're going to; be prepared
- don't 'um'
- don't be nervous
- try and ask questions to them
- present yourself accordingly, show them how you would like them to see you
- don't speak too much
What I learnt and have taken from the mock interviews and can apply to anything as a job interview or university/drama school audition:
• Don't say your passionate about what you're applying for, the interviewers will see that while you answer their questions
• It is better to be prepared academically for the job you're applying for as the courses do help develop your skills which you can take into the job you're applying for. From personal experience also, you're able to get into contacts, have more opportunities presented to you which you can then apply as an experience and present that
• If you're passionate as you say, you will find yourself looking for a job that will help add onto your experience even if it is unpaid work. The interviewer will see that there is dedication and commitment
• Do research on what you're applying for
